Swordtail Fish

Swordtail fish are named because of their characteristic sword like extension to the caudal fin of the male. The larger female of the species has no sword.

Selective breeding programs have resulted in many different colour strains being produced. The male is more colorful than the female.

The green swordtail, is the most common of the swordtail species.

These fish are suitable for a small tropical fish tank but in a larger tank can grow as large as 4 inches in length.

They like to swim on all levels of the tank and are very active fish.

They are peaceful and wont usually attack other fish.

They are omnivores. Its diet includes both plants and small crustaceans, insects, and annelid worms.

The males' elongated caudal fins have been found to significantly affect their chances at mating.
