Fish Tank Gravel
The fish tank gravel you choose depends on
the type of system you have; coldwater, tropical or marine.
Each system requires a different type of gravel to imitate
the fishes natural environment.
Coldwater
If you have a coldwater tank pea gravel, aquarium
peat or a coal gravel mix are suitable. Each of these materials
look different so you can choose how you want your aquarium
to look and if you want to try and imitate the natural environment.
Tropical
Pea gravel works well with tropical fish tanks.
You could also use silver sand if you want to give the tank
a marine look with large rocks for decoration.
Marine
Sand or shingle collected from the seashore
are suitable materials for marine tanks. Crushed coral sand
looks very nice and is authentic but is an expensive option.
Avoid using artificially coloured gravel (designed
for kids goldfish bowls) in your aquarium, the glaring colours
will detract from your fishes coloration and the dye used
in their production may escape and affect the chemistry
of the water.
You can also enhance your aquascape and conceal
unsightly hardware with rocks, shells and logs. Take care
that you do not obstruct the filter pipes.
To stop wood floating to the surface attach
it to bits of slate using sealant.
