Feeding Fish
When feeding fish you need to ensure you have
the right food for all the species of fish in your tank.
Here you will find information on basic diet for your fish,
types of food and how frequently you should feed them.
Basic Diet
Fish need carbohydrates, minerals, vitamins,
fats, proteins and water. The best way to give your fish
all the nutrients they requires to feed them a varied diet
of good quality foods including live and manufactured foods.
In community tanks flakes will feed the surface
feeders, pellets the bottom feeders and live foods the mid
water feeders.
Frequency
Feeding little and often is preferable to
one large daily meal. Add small amounts of food two or three
times a day and try to vary each meal.
Pre-Packed Food
Make sure you buy some all-in-one complete
dried fish food which contains everything your fish need
to remain healthy. Flakes are ideal for smaller fish.
Flake food is the best all-in-one dried food.
It tends to float for a while, so feeding surface feeders,
then sinks slowly so mid feeders and then bottom feeders
can eat.
Pellets, Granules and Tables which usually
sink quickly are ideal for bottom feeders. You can also
stick tablets onto the glass for mid feeders and so you
can see your fish eat.
Freshly caught and frozen natural foods can
be fed to fish at a later date, with no degradation of their
food value.
Live Food
Give your fish live food as a treat. Fishes
derive a good deal of nutritional benefit from live food
and enjoy hunting. Brine shrimp, bloodworms and water fleas
are available from most dealers.
Food Scraps
Some of the food we eat ourselves is suitable
for fishes when served in appropriate scaled down portions.
Meat, cheese, vegetables and oat flakes are all good fish
foods.
